BEPPUNICATION is an animated fable created by artists Makiko Furuichi and Jérémy Griffaud during their 2022 residency in Beppu, Japan. Inspired by the Japanese folklore of Namazu, the giant catfish believed to cause earthquakes during the Edo era, the project explores the relationship between humans and the natural world. Drawing from the traditional belief that Namazu could be both a destroyer and a potential source of social renewal, the artists developed their own mythical creature, Zunama. The narrative follows a Yokai named Saruoni and this mysterious creature through a transformative journey set in Beppu's hot springs, creatively reimagining supernatural connections and the unique social dynamics of communal bathing.
